Le Gros Bill- Jean Beliveau, some tidbits about one of hockey’s greatest ambassadors

Jean Beliveau, on the night he scored his 500th goal, February 11, 1971. I remember watching the game on TV. He scored a hattrick that night with his third goal being number 500. Montreal beat Minnesota 6-2, the goalie was Gilles Gilbert.

First of all prayers and thoughts to the Beliveau family as big Jean fights his latest health battle, this time a stroke which has hospitalized the Hall of Fame former player.  Beliveau’s nickname is from a movie of the same name, Le Gros Bill, released in 1949 which featured a song of the same name. …

NHL rule allows coaches to decide. What?

Kerry Fraser ( now retired ) was accused several times of making up his own rules. :) Just kidding.

The details and descriptions of the NHL rules are quite varied. I have to admit however, that I had no idea there were examples in the rules that allowed for a coach’s option in several different shorthanded scenarios.  In fact in the rules it states it’s a ‘captain’s challenge’ but clearly and as we saw …

Happy birthday to Phil Esposito

Phil Esposito takes the puck wide on Vladimir Petrov, one of only two right hand shots on the Soviet team. The other? Lyapkin, the defenseman who bobbled the puck, turning it over to Phil who fed Paul for THEE goal. Game, set, match. Let's party.

Imagine all of the hockey games played by all of the greats in various leagues and championships the world over in the past 120 years – then imagine that in the eyes of many, mine included, you are the player regarded as having played the most inspirational, heroic, incredible twenty minutes of hockey, ever, with …

Stephen Brunt honours the Soviets, whoop de doo…

Gilbert Perreault, shown here in 1972, was leading the Canada Cup in scoring in 1981 when he suffered a broken ankle. Not sure why Stephen Brunt left that out.

This is a response I post ed to twitter after reading Mr. Stephen Brunt’s piece on the ’81 Canada Cup.   Stephen Brunt honours the Soviets, whoop de doo… Wow Stephen thanks for the great walk down memory lane about the 1981 Canada Cup.  I’m wondering if I scour the archives if last year …

Three things every Toronto Maple Leaf fan should know

BB-Leafs-Logo

As much as the Leafs have improved this year and may be poised for their first playoff run since 2004, for the time being the mere mention of 1967 conjures up certain memories. Leaf fans know it was the last time their team won the Stanley Cup.  The black and white footage of the parade …

How big could a Rick Nash deal be? Check these out.

Eric Lindros was thought to be the most complete player ever when he was drafted and subsequently when his NHL career began. The trade involving his rights from Quebec to Philadelphia is the biggest in NHL history for one player.

So it’s official. Rick Nash is on the market.  It’s an interesting scenario given he has this incredible combination of size, strength,  solid skater with a great shot yet has not really produced a ton of points in his NHL career. Yet the thinking is if/when Columbus GM Scott Howson deals him he will command a …

Hockey history- a trip back in time

Red Kelly ( left ) with Leafs coach and GM Punch Imlach and Frank Mahovlich. This group won four Stanley Cups together.

I’ve been roaming the twitter universe since this past January and I have to say, it’s been a blast. Hooking up with the various hockey media, old friends, making new ones and discussing and debating hockey has been the rule in the 5+ weeks I’ve been on board. Before I go into some detail about …

The French Canadian rule-fact or fiction?

Rockett Richard signed a C form with the Montreal Canadiens in 1938. Later, during his first 3 years as a pro, Montreal GM Tommy Gorman tried several times to trade him due to his perceived brittleness. Fortunately for him, the team, the city and their fans, that did not happen.

Starting in the year 2000 and for the next seven years I worked extensively on researching how every single player that played for the Montreal Canadiens, became a Montreal Canadien. Following is a story, first printed in 2007 with a few changes to update. I look forward to any response.   The Montreal Canadiens have won …

It was one thing to get up to the second updates on Sam Gagner’s eight point game against Chicago on Thursday February 2nd but when he picked up right where he left off on Saturday night with two goals and three points in the first period of Edmonton’s game against Detroit the twitter world just …
